Packing Tips

When packing for a move:

Assemble packing materials – boxes, white wrapping paper, tape and marking pens.

Get spiral bound 4 x 6 cards at Walgreens or Osco or Dominicks.

Number the pages of this book 1 – xx, according to number of boxes packed.

As you pack, number each box.  Then jot down 4 – 6 items in that box.  Not necessary to note all items since you know what you generally keep in same place in current home.

Decide on a color code (red – basement, blue – master bedroom, yellow – kitchen, etc.)
And then put large colored dot on each box below number.    This allows movers to put
boxes where they will be unpacked according to color code.

Be sure to put color code poster sheets on door of each room to assist movers when moving into new location.

This is the ideal time to delete items you do not need at new home.  Pitch, pitch, pitch.

Pack items that will be needed at new home in boxes specially marked to be Opened First.   Cleaning supplies, etc. should be quickly accessible at new home.

By using numbers on each box instead of writing what is inside, you save a lot of writing and also protect against theft.   Who is going to steal a box not knowing for sure whether it contains garage junk or your valuable sterling silver?

Keep the code book(s) out so you have your Quick Reference Guides handy to locate items that you need quickly.   This also helps you to know which boxes can be set aside for later unpacking.
